What Is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a sales tax levied in India on the supply of goods and services. This is a comprehensive, multi-level, destination-based tax. It is comprehensive as it includes almost all indirect taxes except some state taxes.

3 Components Of GST?

CGST

It stands for Central Goods and Services Tax, and is charged on the trade that happens within the state. It belongs to the Central Government.

SCGST

It stands for Stage Goods and Services Tax, and is also charged on the trade that happens within the state. It belongs to the State Government.

IGST

It stands for Integrated Goods and Services Tax, and is charged on inter-state trade or service transactions.

Here’s What You Need To Know About GST

Goods and services are divided into 5 different tax categories for tax collection: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.

However, petroleum products, alcoholic beverages and electricity are not taxed by GST, but the previous tax system is taxed individually by each state government and gold is taxed at 3%.

In addition, some items such as sodas, luxury cars and tobacco products are subject to a 28% GST plus a 22% rebate or other tax rate.

Before GST, the statutory tax rate for most commodities was around 26.5%, but after GST, the tax rate for most commodities is in the 18% range.

Tax Slabs In India:

  • 5% - Household Necessities & Daily Essentials
  • 12% - Secondary Necessities
  • 18% - Number of Relatively Essential Items
  • 28% - Luxurious Items

GST can be calculated simply by multiplying the Taxable amount by GST rate. If CGST & SGST/UTGST is to be applied then CGST and SGST both amounts are half of the total GST amount. For example, the GST including amount is Rs. 525 and the GST rate is 5%.
